Project 2: LIST, Wupperverband, University of Luxembourg, SIDEN – Energy Online System (EOS)
Until now, energy efficiency analyses have been done to get an insight in the energy efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Although useful data can be generated, the disadvantage of such analyses is that they are often based on historical, already outdated data. Furthermore, there is normally a time delay until measures decided upon are implemented.
In INNERS, LIST, together with Wupperverband, SIDEN and the University of Luxembourg will develop a multi-criteria expert system for the real-time energy optimization of wastewater treatment plants. The system is called the Energy Online System (EOS). It will result in a continuous provision of energy consumption data of a WWTP.
To test whether the tool can improve the energy balance of a WWTP, investigations will be carried out on two municipal wastewater treatment plants, with different characteristics: Heischtergronn in Heiderscheidergrund (Luxembourg) and WWTP Buchenhofen in Wuppertal (Germany).
- A definition of benchmarks for the evaluation of the current energy consumption.
- Insight in the performance of energy consumption at WWTPs, both on the short term and the long term.
- Insight in the energetic saving potential and possible reduction of related costs.
